Court Orders Nigerian Govt To Set Prices For Goods And Petroleum Products

The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has ordered the Nigerian government to set prices for a range of goods and petroleum products within a week.
This ruling was as a result of a motion filed by a reknown human rights Activist, Femi Falana.
Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa, who presided over the case, pointed out that, despite being served with the motion, the defendants did not file a counter-affidavit.
The court deemed all the details in the affidavit as admitted and granted all the requests.
The court’s directive requires the government to fixed prices for items such as flour, milk, salt, bicycles, spare parts, sugar, matches, motorcycles, motor vehicles, spare parts, spare parts, petrol, diesel, kerosene and several others.
Falana instituted the case to know if the Price Control Act is still in use and obligates the government to impose prices on certain goods.
He also challenged the government’s failure to set prices, citing its illegality under the Price Control Act.
While ruling, the court issued an order mandating the government to set prices for the specified goods and petroleum products within seven days of the judgment.
