Gov. Ododo Orders Stoppage Of mandatory tax clearance registration in State Owned Higher Institutions

The Kogi State Government has put to stop the earlier directive mandating students at the state-owned tertiary institutions to present their parents’ Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) for registration.

In a Quarterly press-briefing at kogi state Internal Revenue Service, KGIRS office in Lokoja by the Executive Chairman, Alhaji Sule Salihu Enehe on Wednesday said KGIRS has withdrawn the earlier written order addressed to all the heads of the state owned tertiary institutions to present their parents’ Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) for registration.

The Executive chairman further said the enforcement of tax payments registration through students in higher institutions in kogi state has been stopped following the superior directives.

“Before we arrived at our earlier decision, we did our random sampling in Lagos and some states in Nigeria and we found out that
children from age 6 were told to show the evidence of parents tax clearance before admission but we have put a stop to such registration in kogi, we therefore call on parents to pay their tax as at when due, he stressed.

He therefore appeals to the media to always assist to create more awareness to the people to always pay their tax as at when due, saying payment of tax has been existing before we are all born.

Alhaji Enehe reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, towards ensuring quality tertiary education, growth and development in the state.

He said” it is only in kogi state you have Primary and secondary schools benefing from free education through the payment of WAEC fees. It’s only in kogi you have three universities, each in the three senatorial districts of the state, so, kogi is ahead of other states, by the virtue of having three universities”.

“In our taxation law, anybody who default are liable to pay fine of 2,000, or 6 months imprisonment while corporate organisation will pay 500,000 or 2years imprisonment “.

Alhaji Enehe noted that the KGIRS target last
Year 2024 was N30.2b naira and was able to realised 23.7 billion, he therefore assured kogi state government of meeting up with this year 2025 target of N35.1 billion.
